Lorna Mae, a doll club project

This is Lorna Mae and she is a project for our doll club, Reining Dolls and Bears where we are to create and Izannah Walker inspired Early American style doll.

I used Sherry Lutz's techniques from the Fall 1998 issue of the now defunct cloth Doll Magazine. I really miss that magazine, it was the one that featured my very first design and cover doll, Dixie Belle.

This doll has a clay sculpt mask over cloth , and cloth skin added which is hardened with modeling paste. It is then painted with acrylics. I used the modeling paste for her applied hair as well. I aged the face a bit and sealed head hands and legs with gel medium, with a final brown paper bag buff.

I am thinking that her head is too round and hands need to be reduced, so this first attempt is just learning some of the techniques.

I don't think realism was such a priority that you need to worry about the head shape -- and I think your doll is wonderful just as she is. Very VERY beautiful in fact. I did that pattern too, but I used a mask instead of sculpting my own head. Yours is very much an original.

Patti Your doll is wonderful! All you Oregon gals are making these kind of dolls! LOL I don't think the head is too big. If you still do, just make a bigger body!! I might want to try this one time and I have that issue of The Cloth Doll!

Excellent work, Patti! I agree with the others, she looks absolutely lovely, but I totally understand changing her. When I am not satisfied with parts of a doll, those parts cry out to me until I replace them or fix them to my satisfaction. The doll is not "finished" until then. Will look forward to seeing her "finished"!

You did a great job - I like the shape of her head!!

I was just looking at that issue of Cloth Doll Magazine when I was cleaning my studio. I also looked at the one with your doll on the cover.
I miss that magazine too and cherish the copies I have!
